At school, helping children to grow into safe, respectful and confident digital citizens is a key priority. As children spend more time online for learning, communication and play, it’s important that they understand how to make good choices and recognise risks. To support this work, we use ProjectEVOLVE, a comprehensive digital literacy and online safety toolkit created by SWGfL and based on the UK Council for Internet Safety’s (UKCIS) Education for a Connected World framework.
📚 Curriculum‑Aligned Lessons
Teachers use the ProjectEVOLVE materials across the year, selecting content that best fits children’s age and stage. The framework is grouped into key strands — such as Health & Wellbeing, Privacy & Security, Online Bullying and Copyright & Ownership.
These structured lessons help children build their knowledge step-by-step as they move through the school.
🧩 Knowledge Maps & Pupil Discussions
One of the strengths of ProjectEVOLVE is its “knowledge map” system, which helps us identify what children already understand. Through guided discussions and reflective questions, teachers can see where pupils feel confident and where further teaching is needed. This allows lessons to be responsive, meaningful and rooted in children’s real experiences.
🎬 Practical Scenarios & Real‑Life Contexts
ProjectEVOLVE includes scenarios that reflect children’s everyday digital lives — from online gaming to group chats to video sharing. These help pupils talk openly about what they see and do online, and to practise making sensible decisions in a safe, supportive environment.
👨👩👧 Working in Partnership with Families
A key message within ProjectEVOLVE is that online safety works best when schools and families work together. We regularly share tips, reminders and conversation starters with parents so that children hear consistent messages both at home and in school.
Using ProjectEVOLVE ensures our online safety teaching is thorough, up to date and rooted in national guidance. It helps children learn how to stay safe, behave responsibly and show kindness online — skills that will stay with them well beyond their time with us.
