Forest School
At Cornerstone, we are proud to offer a Forest School program that provides our pupils with rich, hands-on learning experiences in the natural environment. Forest School is a unique educational approach that supports holistic development through regular sessions in our woodland or outdoor learning space.
What Is Forest School?
Through regular sessions in the natural environment, Forest School nurtures curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning. Children engage in meaningful, open-ended activities that spark imagination and deepen understanding across all areas of development—from communication and problem-solving to physical coordination and environmental awareness. These experiences often link naturally with areas of the national curriculum, enhancing learning in subjects such as science, literacy, and maths through real-world, hands-on exploration. Just as importantly, Forest School supports emotional well-being by offering a calm, inclusive space where every child is valued, encouraged, and empowered to take risks, make decisions, and celebrate their achievements. Over time, children develop resilience, independence, and a deep sense of connection to the natural world—skills and values that last a lifetime.
Our Approach
Our Forest School sessions are led by trained Forest School practitioners and take place weekly. Children engage in activities that may include:
Building shelters and dens
Learning about local plants and wildlife
Safe tool use and bushcraft skills
Creative play and storytelling
Campfire cooking and teamwork challenges
We believe in the power of nature to nurture children’s physical, emotional, and social well-being. The Forest School environment fosters independence, resilience, and a sense of responsibility through managed risk-taking and real-world problem-solving.
Benefits for Children
🌿 Confidence & Self-Esteem: Children gain a sense of achievement from learning new skills in a supportive, non-pressured environment.
🧠 Mental Wellbeing: Regular time in nature supports emotional regulation and reduces anxiety.
👫 Social Skills: Working together encourages communication, cooperation, and empathy.
🛠️ Practical Knowledge: Hands-on learning deepens understanding of science, sustainability, and the world around us.

Our Forest School program is more than just outdoor play — it is an integral part of how we help children grow into curious, capable, and confident learners. By stepping outside the traditional classroom, our pupils discover new ways to think, create, and connect.
