Responsible To: Executive Headteacher / Leadership Team

Main purpose
The School Librarian will:
  • As part of a team of librarians and learning resources

Duties and responsibilities 
Library Support and Management

  • Support staff and pupils with selecting and accessing books and resources that assists learning and extends and enhances patterns of teaching.  
  • Liaise with teachers across the school and with the wider learning community to ensure that there is appropriate access to leaning resources electronic and otherwise and otherwise for pre-KS1, KS1 and KS2.  
  • Manage the school library, both electronic (including e-books) and hard copy resources. 
  • Participate in the delivery of literacy programmes within the school and support literacy and reader development within the school. 
  • Work with others to help plan resources for pre-KS1, KS1 and KS2. 
  • Use the Dewey cataloguing system. 
  • Manage book returns and chase overdue books. 
  • Stock taking of resources. 
  • Analyse usage and borrowing data. 
  • Analyse and review reading data from different assessments to support teachers in the targeting of support and resources to help children in their reading progress. 
  • Support in procurement processes for new resources. 
  • Support children in developing their knowledge of libraries and books and to operate a ‘Junior Librarian’ scheme, in conjunction with other staff.  
  • Support children and their families in the reading schemes supported by the school.  
  • Liaise with parents, both in person and electronically to support them in the use of library and the borrowing of books and resources.

  • Use IT tools fully to support children in their reading development.  
  • Embrace and fully support the reading schemes offered by the school.

Health, safety, and discipline

  • Promote the safety and wellbeing of pupils.

Professional development

  • Take part in the school’s appraisal procedures.
  • Take part in further training and development to improve own professional development and personal effectiveness.
  • Where appropriate, take part in the appraisal and professional development of others.
  • Regularly review the effectiveness of your role and its impact on pupils’ progress and attainment and responding to advice and feedback from others.

Communication

  • Communicate effectively with other staff members and pupils, and with parents and carers as needed.
  • Use IT systems efficiently and effectively to communicate and collaborate.
  • Respond quickly to emails and messages.
  • Provide clerical / administrative support, as necessary.

Working with colleagues and other relevant professionals 

  • Working collaboratively with the other librarians to support the teaching staff, specialist advisory teachers and other relevant professionals regarding meeting the reading needs of the children.

  • Uphold public trust in the profession and maintain high standards of ethics and behaviour, within and outside school.
  • Have proper and professional regard for the ethos, policies, and practices of the school, and maintain high standards of attendance and punctuality.

Management of staff and resources

  • Direct and supervise pupils in the appropriate use of resources ensuring they are maintained to a high standard and looked after responsibly.

Other areas of responsibility

  • To demonstrate a commitment to the full life of the school and to work with all members of staff to ensure the success of whole school initiatives and assemblies, fayres & fund raising, open evenings and other activities as they occur in school.
  • Act as a mentor to a select group of children, discussing and reviewing their class work, identifying where they may be struggling and offering ideas to help. Recording the mentor meetings and escalating concerns to the class teachers, as necessary.

Qualities

Qualifications and experience
  • Level 2 or 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools; Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education; Other relevant qualification in nursery work or childcare (or willingness to work towards if not already held)
  • GCSEs at Grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) including English and maths;
  • Experience of working with children
Skills and knowledge
  • Good literacy and numeracy skills;
  • Good organisational skills;
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with pupils and adults;
  • Skills and expertise in understanding the reading needs of all pupils;
  • Knowledge of how to help adapt and deliver support to meet individual needs;
  • A good understanding and interest in children’s books and willingness to keep up to date with latest trends, authors, and subject matter (pre-KS1, KS1, KS2);
  • Excellent verbal communication skills; Active listening skills;
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations;
  • Knowledge of guidance and requirements around safeguarding children;
  • Good ICT skills;
  • Understanding of roles and responsibilities within the whole school context
