Celebrating World Book Day

Last week, Yeo Valley Primary School was buzzing with excitement as we celebrated World Book Day. It was wonderful to see so many children arriving at school dressed as characters from their favourite books.

From classic stories to modern favourites, the creativity and enthusiasm on display truly brought books to life and filled the school with a real love of reading. Seeing pupils proudly share their favourite characters and stories helped create a joyful atmosphere across the school and reminded us how powerful books can be in inspiring young readers.

A special highlight of the day was the announcement of our 500 Words Competition winners. The winning stories were shared and celebrated, showcasing the fantastic imagination, creativity and writing talent across the school. We are incredibly proud of all the children who took part and impressed us with their ideas and storytelling skills.

Illustrator Visit Inspires Creativity

As part of our World Book Day celebrations, we were delighted to welcome illustrator Joseph Witchall to work with pupils.

Joseph led engaging sessions focused on illustration and visual storytelling, giving children the opportunity to explore how pictures can tell a story just as powerfully as words. Working alongside the children, he shared ideas, techniques and inspiration as they developed their own illustrations.

Joseph was incredibly encouraging and helped the children to see themselves as illustrators, building confidence and creativity throughout the sessions.

The children were especially inspired by his book Verdy, which sparked thoughtful discussion and imaginative responses. Joseph’s passion for illustration and storytelling shone through, leaving a lasting impression and inspiring our pupils to think creatively about art, stories and books.

We would like to thank Joseph for such an inspiring visit and for sharing his talent and enthusiasm with our children.

The day was a wonderful celebration of reading, creativity and storytelling, reminding us how books can inspire imagination and bring our school community together.
