Main Purpose 

The teacher will:

  • Fulfil the professional responsibilities of a music teacher, as outlined below and in conjunction with the policies referred to in the Trust’s staff policies.
  • Meet the expectations set out in the Teachers’ Standards.

Duties and responsibilities 

Teaching

  • Plan and teach well-structured music lessons to assigned children. Teaching music theory, aural skills and practical techniques.  
  • Acquire and provide appropriate teaching materials and resources.  
  • Arrange recitals and concerts for pupils’ families and friends.  
  • Assess, monitor, record and report on the learning needs, progress, and achievements of assigned pupils, making accurate and informative assessments.  
  • Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of pupils.
  • Promote good progress and outcomes by pupils.  
  • Demonstrate good subject knowledge. 
  • Participate in arrangements for preparing pupils for external tests. Ensuring remain up-to-date and knowledgeable about examination requirements.
  • Have a clear understanding of the needs of all pupils, including those with special educational needs; gifted and talented; EAL; disabilities; and be able to use and evaluate distinctive teaching approaches to engage and support them. 
  • Treat pupils with dignity, building relationships rooted in mutual respect, and always observing proper boundaries appropriate to a teacher’s professional position. 
  • Give pupils regular feedback, both orally and through accurate marking, and encourage pupils to respond to the feedback, reflect on progress, their emerging needs and to take a responsible and conscientious attitude to their own work and study. 
  • Set extra-curricular work to extend the knowledge and understanding pupils have acquired as appropriate. Setting an expectation that at least three 20-minute practise sessions a week is expected from children receiving individual paid-for music lessons.

  • Attend and take a constructive part in staff meetings. 
Health, safety, and discipline
  • Promote the safety and wellbeing of pupils.
  • Maintain good order and discipline among pupils, managing behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment.
  • Be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people within the school, raising any concerns following school protocol/procedures.
  • Act within, the statutory frameworks, which set out the professional duties and responsibilities and in line with the duties outlined below. Take responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people within the school.
  • Escalate concerns in a timely fashion and through the correct tools as directed to you.
Professional development
  • Take part in further training and development to improve own teaching.
Communication
  • Communicate effectively with pupils, parents and carers and other professional bodies as required whilst maintaining confidentiality.
  • Use IT systems efficiently and effectively to communicate and collaborate.
  • Respond quickly to emails and messages.
Working with colleagues and other relevant professionals
  • Collaborate and work with colleagues and other relevant professionals within and beyond the school.
Personal and professional conduct
  • Uphold public trust in the profession and maintain high standards of ethics and behaviour, within and outside school.
  • Have proper and professional regard for the ethos, policies, and practices of the school, and maintain high standards of attendance and punctuality.
  • Understand and act within the statutory frameworks setting out their professional duties and responsibilities.
