Post Title: School Nurse
Responsible To : Head of Children’s Services
Salary Grade Range: Cornerstone SEND professionals Scale
Main Purpose
The School Nurse will:
- Work independently in accordance with school policies to support the delivery of quality health promotion, education and wellbeing across the MAT. To provide an enhanced and supplementary service to that provided by the commissioned school nurse service.
Support Requirements
- To support families and pupils with any health needs, for example, sleep, bladder and bowel, allergy and dietary concerns and to support and provide guidance to staff members to help them support families and pupils with these needs
- To support families and pupils with emotional health needs including bereavement, divorce, separation, parenting and behaviour advice and to guide staff members to help them deal with these pupils and families
- To meet with families about any specific health needs, both physical and emotional health
Working with Pupils Requirements
- To provide 1 to 1 sessions with children to support their emotional health and wellbeing where appropriate consent has been obtained
- To teach PHSE within the classroom, including how the body works, how to look after it, puberty and growing up
- To promote public health messages to pupils and families
- To gain the appropriate consent from parents for undertaking individual work with pupils
Training & Information Requirements
- To support staff with training and information on specialist. Complex and individual health and medical needs
- Design individual health care plans for children with specific needs, in liaison with the relevant parties
- To devise an implement policies relating to health needs
- To provide awareness sessions to staff on specific health issues, including epilepsy, seizures, asthma, epi pens, etc
- To advise on first aid issues as and when required, although not in the capacity as the first aid trained person on site
- To support the school in meeting its statutory obligations within ‘supporting pupils at school with medical conditions.’
Multi Agency Working Requirements
To work with the principles of ‘Working Together’
To attend meetings, including those with other professionals, as required, including CAF and team around the child meetings
To liaise with other professionals in order to provide support to pupils and their families
To liaise with health services, including GP’s, ensuring referral are made and consent is received from parents
To refer pupils / families to other agencies as required
To liaise with the commissioned school nurse as and when required
Information Security / Record Keeping Requirements
To ensure all confidential information relating to pupils, families and staff is stored in a locked cabinet, within a locked room
To ensure that pupil / family / staff confidentiality is maintained and information is only shared on a ‘need to know’ basis.
To ensure that all record keeping is undertake in accordance with Section 10 of ‘The code’ from the Nursing & Midwifery Council
Safeguarding Requirements
To ensure that children are safeguarded at all times
To make referrals directly to the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (or its equivalent) regarding health related concerns
General Requirements
To work across other Academy Trust Schools as required
To contribute to the wider work of the school / Trust in raising standards
To keep up to date with current practice by reading widely and personal CPD
Additional Information
As the post holder is a qualified and practising nurse, the post holder must at all times adhere to the ‘The Code’ as defined by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The post holder
will confirm their commitment to upholding the standards within the code during renewal of their MMC Membership. The Code covers 4 topics which include:

- Promoting Professionalism and Trust

The school nurse does not carry the same responsibilities / duties to that of the commissioned school nurse and is intended to provide an enhanced and supplementary service to that of the commissioned nurse service. The post holder will not hold the health records of pupils; these will remain with the commissioned school nurse service.
Professional Supervision
Due to the nature of the role, the post holder will receive professional or clinical supervision once per term.
