Post Title: Site Maintenance Officer

Responsible To: Site Team Leader

Salary Range: Cornerstone Support Pay Scale

Main purpose 

The Site Maintenance Officer will:

  • Work with the Trust Business Manager, Team Leader, Project Manager and colleagues to provide a well maintained and safe environment for users of the school buildings and grounds.   

Duties and responsibilities 

  • Safeguarding is paramount and we must ensure that we prioritise safeguarding and Health and Safety concerns at all times and report issues to the safeguarding lead/Team Leader where appropriate. 
  • Work closely with the Site Team Leadermaintenance team, and cleaning staff to ensure the smooth running of all site operations. 
  • Undertake regular grounds maintenance, including leaf blowing, mowing, hedge cutting, minor tree works and ensure that the grounds are maintained to a high standard.
  • Carry out routine and emergency maintenance, minor repairs, and improvements to buildings, grounds, and equipment.  
  • Moving and transporting staging, chairs for events. 
  • Undertake project work with the team including fencing, building sheds, painting and decorating. 
  • Undertake regular compliance checks, including health and safety inspections, fire safety, security systems, and legionella risk assessments. Record and report findings, taking prompt action to address any issues. 
  • Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with statutory regulations, school policies, and best practice guidelines. 
  • Supervise contractors and visitors to ensure compliance with site rules and health and safety requirements. 
  • Act as a key holder, responsible for site security, including locking/unlocking premises and responding to call-outs. 
  • Maintain and monitor security systems, alarms, and CCTV, reporting any breaches or concerns. 
  • Promote a safe working and learning environment for all users of the school. 
  • Monitoring and support cleaning operations, ensuring high standards of cleanliness and hygiene throughout the site. 
  • Carry out emergency cleaning as required (e.g., spillages, gritting in icy weather).

  • Support the Team Leader to ensure an efficient service is maintained and support is provided to ensure the site(s) is kept at a high standard and meets health and safety requirements  

Health, safety, and discipline

  • Promote the safety and wellbeing of pupils and staff and report any concerns to the appropriate person 
    • Be aware of and ensure good hygiene practices and high standards of:  
    • Personal Hygiene 
    • Wear the correct/clean uniform and PPE  
    • Cleanliness of equipment and premises.  

Professional development

  • Take part in the school’s appraisal procedures. 
  • Take part in further training and development to improve own professional development and personal effectiveness. 

Communication and IT 

  • Communicate effectively with other staff members and children, as necessary.   
  • Foster a culture of mutual respect, open communication, and shared responsibility within the team.
  • Support colleagues, share expertise, and contribute to a positive team ethos.  
  • Use of Teams, planner and phone (provided) are required as part of your role.

  • Develop effective relationships with the Maintenance team.

Management of staff and resources

  • Use resources in an effective and efficient way ensuring they are maintained to a high standard and looked after responsibly.  
  • Manage stock levels of consumables and arrange for replacements as needed. 

Other information 

  • Hours and times of work may be varied at any time in accordance with pupil numbers to meet the needs of the school.  
  • On occasions, you may be required to work overtime or to work at any school in the Trust where cover is required 
  • You will need to attend school events that are out of hours.

Qualifications

  • Experience in site maintenance/caretaking; Health & Safety training or willingness to undertake training; relevant compliance or facilities certifications desirable  

Experience

  • Proven experience in building and grounds maintenance, compliance checks, and working as part of a team; experience supervising contractors or supporting cleaning operations; experience in maintaining security and safety systems

Skills & Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of health & safety, safeguarding, and compliance requirements; ability to carry out and record compliance checks; effective communication skills with staff, pupils, and external partners; ability to work independently and collaboratively; basic DIY and repair skills; ability to prioritise and manage resources efficiently; IT literacy for record-keeping and compliance documentation
